What Is an Ambigram?
An ambigram is a word, name or phrase designed so it retains meaning — or reveals a different reading — when viewed from another orientation. The most common forms are rotational ambigrams (readable after 180° rotation) and mirror ambigrams (reflected across an axis).
Unlike simply rotating ordinary text, a true ambigram often requires custom letterform construction, careful spacing and stroke balance. Our generator produces typographic concepts to help you explore ideas before professional refinement.

Why Some Words Work Better
Short words with balanced letters tend to produce cleaner ambigram concepts. Letters like O, S, X and H have natural symmetry. Pairs such as M/W and n/u are commonly used in rotational designs — though actual results depend on typeface and custom modification.

Common visual relationships used in ambigram design. These are guidelines, not universal rules.
| Pair | Type | Note |
|---|---|---|
| M ↔ W | Rotational | Classic vertical flip relationship |
| N ↔ N / Z | Rotational | Depends on typeface construction |
| O ↔ O | Rotational | Circular forms rotate cleanly |
| S ↔ S | Rotational | Works with balanced stroke design |
| n ↔ u | Rotational | Lowercase pair with stroke adjustment |
| m ↔ w | Rotational | Width and baseline must align |
| b ↔ q | Rotational | Bowl direction transforms |
| d ↔ p | Rotational | Ascender/descender swap |
| A ↔ A | Mirror | Vertical axis symmetry |
| H ↔ H | Both | Strong bilateral symmetry |
